When considering root canal treatment, it’s important to understand the risks and benefits. Root canal treatment is usually very successful, but there’s a small risk that the procedure may fail and the tooth may need to be removed.

Some risks are also associated with root canal treatment, such as pain, infection, and swelling. However, these risks are usually minor and can be easily treated.

When Is Root Canal Treatment Necessary?

Steps of a Root Canal Procedure

Endodontic treatment is relatively simple, it can often be performed in one or two visits. The dentist needs to clean out the infected pulp and fill the canals.

• Steps of a root canal procedure involves:
• Preparing for the procedure: First, you may need to get certain medications, such as antibiotics or pain relievers, before the procedure to help manage any discomfort after the procedure is complete. The endodontist examines and takes a radiograph of the affected tooth using dental x-rays.
• Anesthesia: The dentist begins by numbing the area (to numb the tooth’s root and the surrounding gums.) It’s a local anesthesia.
• Dental dam: Once the tooth is numb and before beginning root canal treatment, a dental dam will be placed over the area to isolate the tooth and keep it clean and dry during the procedure.
• Accessing and cleaning the roots and pulp removal: Next step, the dentist makes a small opening in the crown of the tooth to access the pulp. Very small instruments will be used to clean the pulp chamber and root canals (by removing the blood vessels, nerves and tissues) to shape the space for filling. An antiseptic solution and antibacterial are used to clean and sterilize the canals.
• Filling the canals and sealing the tooth: Once the root canals are cleaned, disinfected and shaped, the endodontist fills the root canals with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha, it’ll be placed with an adhesive cement to ensure complete sealing of the root canals. In most cases, a temporary filling is placed to to close the opening and to prevent bacteria from re-entering.
• After the final visit you’ll need a temporary dental crown to protect and restore the full function of the treated tooth.
